Avoid making these 10 Interior design mistakes while renovating your home

Interior designing is a process that requires lot of imagination because if you actually implement everything that you have in your mind then it will cost a lot.  So rather than relying too much on your imagination and to avoid any mistakes it is always good to take advice from the experts.  Here we are going to discuss some of the mistakes that you can avoid if you are renovating your home.

1.  Do not buy things of wrong scale and proportion: Interior designing means that you take care of the size of your room while renovating it.  For example, if you are buying furniture like a sofa set for your drawing room then you must take the measurements of your space and buy the furniture accordingly.  Like how long a sofa can be accommodated in your drawing room, how much space will be left for the center table and side table etc.  If you have the measurements you cannot go wrong.

2.  Avoid indulging in impulse buying: Impulse buying makes you end up buying stuff that does not go with your existing interior because what may be appealing to you on an impulse as a standalone piece of furniture or art may not go with the design and décor of your home and you may not even have space to keep it.

3.  Do your budget allocation and don’t ignore it: It is a very important aspect of renovating your home.  So you must have a clear idea of how much budget you have in total and how much you will allocate in each segment of your home.

4.  Don’t avoid asking for expert help: We often do not ask for help as we shy away from asking for help in interior designing.  We should avoid doing that.  When we are renovating our home, we should ask for expert help.  We generally have preconceived ideas that a designer or architect will charge a lot but we should go and talk to the architect or designer about our needs and our budget and they can work around it and help you.  It will save you lot of time and money too.

5.  Don’t clutter your ledges and niches: Sometime people put too many items as display in the ledge and niches that do not look good and in fact look cluttered.  If the showpieces are small then you can keep 2 or 3 but if they are big only one piece looks good.

6.  Don’t keep excess storage: The more you have storage the more stuff you keep storing, which creates clutter.  You should sell out the extra stuff that is not useful.  If you will keep more storage, you will store a lot of stuff in it to use the space, so it is better to have limited storage.

7.  Don’t use fake or artificial flowers: You can use some natural flowers or put some natural plants in the indoors as well as in the outdoors, they look better and they purify the air as well.

8.  Don’t finalize the paint without seeing the sample: Don’t finalize the paint just by seeing it in the shade card.  First use a sample on the piece of wall and if you like it you can go for it or else if you want a darker tinge you can change it but you must try it on a sample.

9.  Don’t order furniture or appliance before the interiors are finished: Sometimes the furniture is ordered and it gets delivered even before the interiors are finished.  So even if it is packed a lot of dust goes into it.  So some buffer must be kept between the date of delivery of your furniture and date of finishing the interior work.

10.  Don’t copy or follow others: While renovating your house you must keep your style in your mind and get the renovation done accordingly.  You must not copy your friend’s house or anyone else that you like and may even be out of your budget because your house is your personal statement, so keep it the way according to your style.

Conclusion:

Renovation of house takes time and money so it is better to take expert advice before spending it.  At CREATIVEBUILD we have expert architects and designers who will give you the best advice that will save both your time and money and you will get amazing results.

How to decorate your bedroom?

Your bedroom is your personal space that you use to relax and unwind and it should be a place that should be warm, cozy, comfortable, and beautiful.  There are quite a number of things that you must consider while decorating your bedroom.

1.  Keep the ceiling preferably white or light colored. Ceiling reflects the light in the room and the room also looks bigger if it is of light colour.  You can get the false ceiling done as it looks elegant and also reduces heat in the summer season.  If you are putting the false ceiling then you can place your lights accordingly.

2.  If you are renovating your bedroom then you must change your ceiling fan as the new ceiling fans are strong, give off good air, and look good and will go with the new decor. If you do not change the ceiling fan then it will look old and will not go with the new decor.

3.  You can get your walls painted or else you can also use wallpaper. Even if you opt for the paint you can just highlight one wall with the wallpapers as there are many colourful wallpapers available in the market that look very nice.  You can get the wallpapers designed as per your choice.

4.  You can also get wall paneling done if you are interested in it and have the time to design it or want to spend so much money in it. This makes the room look expensive and rich but it is an expensive option.

5.  Curtains in the room on the windows look very beautiful and they create the decorative look. If you like bright and vibrant colours then you can use them in the curtains.  Over the windows you can hang curtains or put blinds.

6.  If you have a marble floor then you can get it polished by hiring a mason. If the flooring is not good then you can put vitrified tiles that also look good.  You can also opt for wooden flooring as it looks very good.  You can also use vinyl flooring that also looks good.  Alternatively you can also use wall-to-wall carpet, though it is a must to have vacuum cleaner if you want to use the carpet.

7.  To give a new look to your room you can put headboard in the side of the bed where you sit and place your head. This looks very nice and gives a premium feeling to your room.

8.  If there is enough space in your room then only you must plan cupboards in the room otherwise you can place them in any other room rather than your bedroom.

9.  Invest in a good quality mattress because bedroom is a place where you relax and it is your personal space so you must invest in a quality mattress. If there is a thick mattress in the room then room also looks good.

10.  You can also use nice bed-covers and pillows and cushions at that too makes the room look beautiful and elegant.

Decorating your bedroom is an activity that requires time and imagination and if you want to do it tastefully then it is always good to hire a professional.  We at CREATIVEBUILD have experienced architects and designers and if you want to get your interiors done you can take our help.

Why and how to hire an interior designer?

An interior designer is a person who can design your home on the paper.  While hiring an interior designer it is very important to understand that why you need an interior designer and how to hire one for doing the interiors of your home.  Let us now discuss what all points you must consider before hiring an interior designer.

Plan and budget

1.   First and foremost you must make a plan on the paper that what sort of work you want to get done.

2.   Then the other most important thing is the budget. You must decide the budget for the work that you want to do.  How much money are you willing to spend?

3.  The third thing is to select at least 4 or 5 interior designers that you want to work with. Then fix a one-on one meeting with them and after the meeting visit at least 3 to 4 projects that they have done.  After watching all these projects you can have discussions with them based on what you like.

Share your preferences with the interior designer?

So these are the points that you must consider before hiring an interior designer.  Now let us discuss how interior designers can work for you.

1.  When you are talking to an interior designer what is important is what your taste is and what your need is and why you are getting the interior designing done.

2.  An experienced interior designer will always ask you what you like and what you dislike, else you should tell them about your likes and dislikes. So they don’t make something that you do not like.

3.  Third thing is your colour preference. You must tell your interior designer what colours you like and what colours you don’t like.  This is because colour is a matter of personal taste.

4.  Also tell about your choice related to material. However, while telling about your likes and dislikes also keep your heart and mind open as the designer can also suggest a better option to you keeping in mind your likes and dislikes.

5.  You must share your living style with the interior designer. You must share with your interior designer how you want to spend time in your house.  A very good way of doing this is to invite the designer in your living premises and it will give the designer a feel of your living style.  So the designer will design the home taking into consideration your living style.

Discuss and reevaluate

6.  After meeting and discussion with the interior designer again reevaluate the budget because you will now have a greater understanding of the expense, so if you want to increase or decrease the budget you can do that at this stage and estimate the whole budget again based on the inputs from the designer.

7.  After all this discussion when the designer will have inputs from you they will create a pre-design for your premises. You must not implement the first pre-design, you must discuss it with the designer according to your requirement.  If you want to contemplate about it yourself you may do so or if you want to discuss it along with the designer you can do that.  This is before the creation of the final design so you can add if there is something missing in it.  If you do not like any element of the design that the designer has created in the design then you can eliminate it too.  Since it is your money that is going to be spent to build something so it is your right to save the money if it is not as per your liking or taste, or is not important for you.

8.  After this discussion the overall design will be made again and then you can understand the overall working plan for that.

9.  After this discussion the final design will be created, which you will review and the designer will also review. Still at the time of implementation there may be minor changes that can be done but there should not be any big changes as it would be a major deviation from the design.

Time frame and payment

10.  Set a time frame for the entire project and ask from the designer how long the different tasks would take, like how long it would take to do the flooring, how long it would take to do the ceiling, and how long would it take to do electricity work etc.

11.  Do a clear discussion about money and payment. In what phases money will be given and when it will be given.

12.  Ask for a list of the sequence of activities that will be done in the implementation of the plan from the designer, so that you will have a clear idea of what task will be done when and when it will be finished.

13.  After your project will be completed the interior designer will hand over the project to you. So you must check everything while taking the project from the designer because once the designer will leave it will be difficult to call the workers for the work.

14.  At the time of the handover ask from the designer a list of all people who have worked on the project, who has done what, their office address, phone no, email id etc. so that you may contact them for any need in the future.

At CREATIVEBUILD we do the interior designing in a very meticulous way.  If you want to get the interiors of your home or office done, you may contact us.

10 Points to consider before painting your house

Everyone has a different taste and choice when it comes to choosing the paint for the house.  There are no specific rules for it.  Each one can go according to his or her choice.  However, you can always consider a few points when it comes to painting your house.

Preference, furniture, and size of the room

1.  Use the colour you like:  Whatever paint we get done in our house remains there for 3 to 7 years.  So it is important that you pick a colour of your choice so that you don’t regret it later.

2.  Consider your existing furniture while choosing the paint: In whichever area you are getting the paint done, you must consider the colour of your furniture that is lying there.  We generally can’t change the colour of the furniture and cannot get it painted, so it is good to blend the colour of the wall with it.  Also if there is any structure that is not going to be painted then blend it with the colour of the paint on the wall.

3.  Consider the size of the room: If you are painting a room that is small in size then you can use light colour to make it look big.  If the size of the room is big then you may use dark colours.

Nearby walls, light, and usage of the room for paint in house

4.  Colours on nearby walls: Another point to consider while painting a room is what is the colour of the nearby walls.  If the colour is light or dark and if it will go with the colour of the nearby wall.  If you are using wall paper then also the colour of the wall that you are painting must be coordinated with the colour of the wall paper of the nearby wall.

5.  Light in the room you are painting:  You must consider the amount of light in the area that you are going to paint.  If there is good amount of natural light or if you have put lot of light then you can use slightly darker shades or the bold shades but if there is very less natural light then you must go for lighter shades of colour of the paint on the wall.

6.  Use of the place or room: You must consider how you are going to use the place or the room where the paint is being done.  If it is a puja room, we can use a lighter shade, if it is an activity room we can use brighter shades, or if it is a drawing room we can use a darker or lighter shade based on the colour of the furniture and lighting in the room.

Sample, different shades, lighter tone in ceiling

7.  Get sampling done before painting: In all the colours it is the safest thing to get sampling done before painting any room.  You can make patches of the sample colour on the wall or you can paint primer on the board and then put different shades of the same colour on the board and select the one which is the best according to you.

8.  Use different shades of one colour: You can opt for different shades of the same colour in one room, so each wall turns out to be a slightly different shade of that colour.  This looks very good.

9.  Be careful while using dark colours: You should be very careful while using dark colours, it is quite risky so it is better to use it after sampling it.  If you want to highlight the wall then you may as well use the wallpaper.

10.  Use lighter tone of same colour in ceiling: You can try using a very lighter shade of the colour on the wall for the ceiling that also looks good.  For example if you are using pink colour for your wall then you can use a very lighter tone of pink colour for your ceiling in that room.

How to make your small bedroom look bigger?

Today as the space is becoming an issue in bigger cities and now even in the smaller cities the size of the bedroom is also reducing.  However, there are ways in which you can make your small bedroom look bigger.  These are just the ideas taking into consideration the design, scale, and arrangement.  Just following these simple tips you can make your small bedroom look bigger.

1.  Do not paint your room with dark colours such as red or black.  By using a dark paint you will allow the paint to absorb light.  Go for lighter tones like light blue or off white or cream.  They will keep your mood lighter and provide a more fresh and airy experience.

2.  Get rid of all the furniture items that you don’t need. Sometimes whenever we walk past the furniture shop we think that we need a piece of furniture.  When in fact our closets at home are half empty.  Do not clutter your bedroom.  Think if you need that extra side table. It is though nice to have more things but in fact they are just taking up space and increasing your effort to clean it.

3.  Since your bedroom is really small and you are getting rid of all those useless items try having one bold wall art instead of numerous photos. That one bold wall art will bring attention to the wall and avoid cluttering.

4.  If you want your small bedroom to appear bigger go for low heighted furniture. It’s always a good idea to stay away from tables that are tall for your small bedroom.  Keeping low to the ground will make ceiling appear cleaner and wider.  You can also try using a mattress since a mattress can be easily placed inside the closet when not in use.  This will create a lot of space when you are not sleeping.  By keeping the bed on the ground you have the ceiling look more spacious.

5.  Even though you may be liking lamps, don’t buy the ones with biggest frame. Small decent table lamps will work just fine.  Instead of having floor lamps get table lamps.  This will save the floor space for you.

6.  Try keeping the transparent furniture. Just like you kept your walls light, try keeping furniture that is too dark or bulky.  Even though it will take the same space but it will make the space look big.

7.  The head board behind our bed hardly comes in use. Remove the headboard and add shelves around the bed.  Shelving increases the space that you have in your bedroom.  You can also have built in shelf panels around the bed.  This will create the illusion of depth in the wall, which you can use to keep your stuff.

8.  Instead of having a mirror for dressing up you can have a mirror at the back of the closet. It will save a lot of space. In small bedrooms it is a better idea to hang mirrors instead of photo frames.  The mirrors will add to the aesthetics of your small bedroom and also prove useful.

9.  If you have a small space, it is better to use foldable furniture. They can be folded and expanded, for example the sofa cum bed.  They do not use too much space and at the same time create a room for sitting or sleeping.

10.  If you have a small room don’t make the curtains touch the floor. Allow the legs of your furniture also to show so that it allows the eye to move.  Tie the curtains nicely so the room feels airy and has a good ventilation in the room.

11.  Avoid unnecessary items of decoration that will make you feel suffocated.

12.  A small bedroom will generally have small windows. By having wider and higher drapes you are helping yourself feel that the window is large in scale.  Mount your drapes over the window frames and let them fall.  Take ropes to tie them up nicely.

13.  The bed sheet that you are using should not have sharp colours or patterns. Since the bed in your room is the largest furniture in sight keep the colour of the sheet light.  Lighter and brighter colours always help lift the mood too.

14.  Keep the flow of lines in the room in sync. If the lines of the windows are vertical give the dresser also the vertical patterns, don’t break the flow.

15.  Keep your room well managed and organized because a cluttered room does not look good whether it is small or big. Keep your clothes in the closet and pens in the jar and the bed made is the first thing that you can do to make your small bedroom look bigger and better.

16.  A small bedroom does not need to have all furniture pieces small. However, the thing to know here is the scale you follow for your bed must be the same for your side table and dresser.  Give your room a sense of unity so that all the furniture pieces stay in harmony with each other.

17.  The colour of your trim should be lighter than the wall. The lighter wall paint on the trim will reflect more light thus more light would be available to reflect off the small bedroom.

18.  The colour of your room should make sense. The colour you paint your wall should at least have some connection with your rug and furniture.  Visual coherence is an important thing to master.  Choose one colour scheme and play around with it by using similar types of shades for the rest of the items.

19.  Have a bigger window so that the room appears bigger.

20.  Avoid having furniture that is too large and always buy a sofa with legs. If you can purchase a chair rather than a bulky sofa, it is better.

Using imagination while arranging your furniture and choosing the colours for your wall and furniture are important yet it is better to have a designer design the interiors of your small home to give it a bigger feel.  If you have a small budget then also it is good to invest it wisely and contact our designers at CREATIVEBUILD.  It is a leading interior design company in BTM, Bangalore.
