Home decor: 8 ways to make your home look cohesive

Home decor is an art as well as a science. While each one of us has our unique style and preference yet what is cohesive feels good to all.  If you follow the basic rules then the end result will always be good.

1. Assess the size of your house: If you live in a small home where you can see the entire home from one place, then you have to ensure that it all feels one.  If you have a bigger home, you can try different colour palettes.  However, if you do that in a small home, it will look messy.

2.  Define your colour palette: You should pick different colours that you love.  Then make sure that they go well with each other.

3.  Keep it mostly neutral: In addition to picking your colour palette it is important to keep the base neutral.  You can play with the different shades but try to keep it within the same family of colour.  A good way to do is to remember 60/30/10 rule, where 60% can be neutral, 30% can be the secondary colour, and 10% can be the accent colour.

4.  Know your theme: Make sure what the vibe of your house is.  It can be farmhouse or modern.  Whatever it is keep that theme.  Make it feel that it connects.  All of it doesn’t have to be too matchy but it should be in harmony.

5.  Purge the old: If you have something that was gifted years ago and doesn’t go well with your current style.  Then just let it go.  If you have had something for long, see if it matches your style.  Do you like it?  If you don’t then you can do away with it.

6.  Have the same flooring throughout: Having the same flooring throughout will create a cohesive vibe.  And it will round your environment.

7.  Utilize similar textures and fabric: If you use the same type of fabric in your sofa and dining chairs the home looks cohesive.  The decor of the home looks good when it is cohesive.

8.  Have constant trim details: At all the doors have the same type of cutout shapes, especially the inside doors.  Then all doors should have similar knobs.  This ensures that your decor is cohesive.

Vastu tips for wealth and prosperity

Vastu is an ancient science that deals with correcting the energies in your home.  If you do everything according to the energy of the home or place things as per their designated place according to vastu then you will be helped and supported in your life. Here are some tip for increasing wealth and prosperity in your home.

There are three main things when it comes to increasing wealth and prosperity of your home as per the vastu and that is:

1.  Main door

2.  North east corner

3.  South west corner

So let us discuss each one of them.

1.  Main door

Main door of the house calls for very distinctive decoration so that wealth and prosperity find you easily.  Always have some beautiful design, or a paint, or decoration on the main door.  Avoid keeping main door dull, unattractive, or drab.   And here are a few tips:

A.  Always keep entrance well lit with bright lights.

B.  Make the main door the largest door.

C.  A name plate outside of your home is a must.

D.  Make sure that the main door is noise free i.e. the opening and closing should be noise free. There should not be any creaking noise.

E.  Make sure that the entry to the main door is not obstructed by irrelevant things such as a pole or wire, vehicle, tree or just about any unused item.

If you ensure all of the above then it will attract wealth and prosperity in your home.

2.  North East Corner

The north east corner is very important in vastu because this is the place of God.  So it can also be used for making a prayer room or a puja room.  This is the main source of prosperity and promising wealth in the house:

A.  The north east corner should always be kept clean and completely clutter free.   Keep it open at all times to attract wealth and prosperity towards you.

B.  Keep only light furniture in the north east side of your home. If possible you can make it into a puja room i.e. a place where you worship or do meditation or if not that then an exercise room.

C.  Keep a water fountain that is flowing in this part of the house.

D.  If you have a fish aquarium at home then place in it in the north east corner. And the aquarium should be having the right number of fishes in it and it should be cleaned regularly.

3.  South west corner

It is believed that the money, the wealth, or the important property documents should be kept in this corner of the house.  So here are a few tips:

A.  The placement of the cupboards or almirah should be such that it should be facing north or north east. The jewellery or cash should be kept here.  This is because Lord Kuber who is the lord of money is residing in this direction.

B.  Keep a mirror in cash box to magnify cash and jewellery for wealth creation.

C.  Never keep locker or almirah in which you have locker under any beam as it can put a lot of financial stress on you.

How to create a good ambience in your home?

Having a good ambience is all about having a good atmosphere in your home.  Where you feel relaxed and your mood is elevated because of the decor and design of the home.  It is all about how is your experience of the place.  And experience is about the sensory experience i.e. it includes five senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound.  When a place provides a good sensory experience, it is said to have a nice ambience.

So the question is what creates a good ambience and what are the key elements when it comes to creating a good ambience?  So here are the four key elements that go in creating a good ambience.

Light for ambience

The first and foremost important element of ambience is light.  There are different types of lighting.  The three most important ones are:

1.  Ambient lighting: It brightens up the whole room. This could also be pendant lighting and it is your general source of lighting that adds a layer of brightness to the space.

2.  Task lighting: It is pretty obvious from its name that it is used for a specific task like reading, cooking etc. So it can be on your desk, in the kitchen, or on the bedside.

3.  Accent: Accent lighting is something that is more decorative.  IT lights up a specific part of your house, it can be a work or art or sconces in the kitchen.

The key when it comes to these three different lights is to try to use all of them to create a layered look within the room.  You can have all three types of lights and this is how you can have a cozy ambience in the room.

Colours

You can use colour to create the good ambience in your home.  Starting from the colour of the walls to choosing the colour of your furniture i.e. your sofa, your dining table with chairs, and your bed, you can choose colour that reflect your taste and soothe your mood and can harmonize various colours with each other.  You add layers of more colour with bed sheets, pillow covers, rugs, and artefacts on the walls.  This way you can just accentuate the look and feel of the place.

Fragrance

Just as the colour adds to the overall ambience, the fragrance can also be a factor that can add to it.  You can use oil diffusers for fragrance and choose the fragrance that you like.  Another good way to add fragrance is incense stick and aromatic candles that create a totally different ambience.

Texture

Another sensory perception is touch.   So how your furnishings feel is dependent on their texture.   Cotton feels different than the velvet and it is up to you what you want in terms of texture.

So you can easily set the ambience of your home and make it feel good, so you like to live your life in those surroundings.

If you want to create a good ambience in your home, you must take help of professionals.  We at CREATIVEBUILD can help you create the ambience that you will love.

3 interior design rules for great interiors

When it comes to interior design, one must be very particular about the symmetry and harmony.  To achieve this there are certain rules that if you follow your design will look great and appealing.

1.  3/3 Vertical rule: This is a concept by designer Mark McCauley.  This was brought forth by stripping nature to colours.  According to this the darkest colours are found in the ground like soil, mud, and the very earth.  While the medium tones are in the middle like plants, building, the bodies of water and lastly on the top is the lightest the sky, the clouds, and sunlight.  We can use these elements to interior design and room will look beautiful and balanced.  Using the darker elements on or near the floor, the medium shades in the middle and the lightest on the top.   It is suggested to ascend from dark to light rather than light to dark in interiors.

2.  60-30-10 rule: This rule is all about creating the perfect colour palate for your space. 60-30-10 rule is choosing a main colour, a secondary colour, and an accent colour.  Your favourite colour should just be one of them.  The 60% would be your wall(paint or wallpaper), rugs, sometimes a sofa.  The 30% would be the window treatments, accent chairs, bedding, furniture, accent walls.  Lastly the 10% would be your decor, artworks, throw pillows etc.

3.  Rule of odds: Basically this is arranging or grouping items in odd numbers.  Surprisingly, the odd number groupings look more balanced and visually appealing then even numbered ones. Three is a magical number.

If you follow the above rules your home interior design will look great.  If you want to do interior design of your home visit us at: CREATIVEBUILD
