Top 5 bedroom design ideas

When it comes to bedroom designs one thinks of peaceful and calming surroundings.  Your bedroom may be big or small, it is your personal sanctuary and it ought to be designed as per your preferences.  It is also important to keep in mind some basic things from a designing perspective to get the best results.  Here are our top 5 bedroom design ideas to make your bedroom look and feel exactly like the place where you want to relax, unwind, and connect with yourself.

Colours, lighting, textures in Bedroom design

1.  Colours: When it comes to the colour of your room be it the walls or furniture, it is better to use calm colours.   Some of the examples of calm colours are neutrals, muted greens, blue, rose etc.  This is because the colour that you choose for your walls, furnishings, and floor affects your frame of mind.  So it is better to choose colours that provide a calm sensation.  The colour palette should evoke serenity.  You may use a warm and neutral colour into the general space and add a touch of colour in your bedcovers, pillows, or artwork etc.

2.  Lighting: Lighting should be warm and natural.  The release of hormones such as cortisol and melatonin partly depends on light.  If the lighting is not correct we can have various health problems such as insomnia and obesity.  So we must turn to nature to heal us of these diseases.  Sun’s light during the sunset is warm, soft, and indirect that informs our circadian rhythm that it is time to relax and unwind.  Your aim should be to achieve the same ambience in your bedroom as well.

You can do this through LED lights or table lamps.  Table lamps provide both task and accent lighting.  You also need to make sure that the lighting source of the lamp has the warm, colour temperature.  If your bedroom is very large, you can focus on combining indirect light sources like recessed spotlights and lightstrips with direct light sources like pendants lamps.  In short, lighting should be inspired by nature to crate the perfect atmosphere.

3.  Textures: Texture plays a very important role when it comes to sensations.  You want things like your bedcover, floor rug, and pillow to be of soft texture.  The material that you use for it should be natural and of good quality.  This is because it helps create an ambience at a sensory level.   It also helps you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Declutter and scents

4.  Declutter: Another important tip when it comes to a good interior is decluttering your bedroom.  This is because too much clutter can cause anxiety and lack of sleep.  So it is better to keep your bedroom in order and clear all the surfaces like your bed, tables, floor etc.  There are several storage options that you can use to remove the clutter.

5.  Scents: Scents help to slow down your nervous system so it is a good idea to have some scent in your bedroom.  Some scents like lavender, bergamot, jasmine, rose, and vanilla are the best because its scent relaxes the nervous system.  This allows body and mind to improve the sleep quality.  You can be creative and decorate your room with flowers that are both beautiful and fragrant and add to the beauty and smell of your bedroom.

Our senses are responsible for receiving the information from our space and telling our brain that we are in a good and comfortable environment.  A good design is one that not only has aesthetic value but makes you feel comfortable and gives you a good sensory experience.

Vastu tips for bedroom

If you want to correct the vastu for bedroom, then you must follow the principles of vastu shastra. As per vastu shastra there are some important considerations to be kept in mind while constructing or designing bedroom. These are location, placement of bed, colour scheme, doors, and windows along with other items of use to be kept in the bedroom. Let us understand a few basic but important vastu shastra guidelines to be followed if you want peace and harmony.

Location of bedroom, bed, and sleeping position- vastu for bedroom

1. Location of bedroom: Location of bedroom should be the south west corner of the house and it should be occupied by the head of the family or the main bread earner of the family. The master bedroom should always be bigger than other bedrooms. Avoid the bedroom in the south east as it is in the fire place or “agneya kona”. In case there is a bedroom here, it will always lead to clashes between the couple. Do not use north east direction for the bedroom.

2. The bed: The bed is the most important furniture in the bedroom. Preferably it should be made of wood. Additionally the bed should not be pushed into a tight corner and it should be accessible from all directions of the bedroom. The bed should not be placed under the beam or directly under the ceiling fan as the rotating blades will create ripples in the energy and this will add to depression levels. There should not be anything stored under the bed because it stagnates the energy. The foot of the bed should not be directly facing the door. This may increase the anxiety and the nervousness level of the couple and may affect their bond with each other.

3. Sleeping position: Couples should not sleep with their feet pointed towards the door. Also, the head should always be in the south direction. If this is not possible then the head should be in the west direction.

Electrical appliances and colours in the bedroom

4. Electrical appliances: There should be minimal electrical appliances in the bedroom but if you have these electrical appliances like heater or television, then they should be kept in the south east direction of the bedroom.

5. Recommended colours in the bedroom: Use of soft romantic colours will help improve the romance between the couple. Pastel colours for wall and upholstery in the shades of pink, light blue, rose pink, light green are good choices.

What to avoid in bedroom

6. What should not be in the bedroom: First of all there should be no clutter in your bedroom. In case there is clutter then your life may become stagnant. Do not allow any kind of an item which you have not used for more than 6 months. Anything which is not working for example, clocks or the computer should not be in your bedroom because this will restrict the energy flow and the life might become stagnant.

There should not be heavy furniture in the bedroom because the heavier the furniture the more it will make you cling to the past and you will further invite negative energies. The progress in life will become slower. There should not be too many electronic gadgets. Avoid decorative fountain or aquarium with or without fish in the bedroom. Last but not the least the idols of the God that you worshipp should not be placed in the bedroom. Their place is in the separate puja room or the meditation room.

Take these steps and enjoy happiness and prosperity in your life.

9 tips to make your home feng shui compliant

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice that teaches how to maintain the flow of positive energy in the home.  If the flow is positive the home is full of positive energy and is said to attract health, wealth, and prosperity.  Here are 9 tips to make your home feng shui compliant:

Feng shui of the door

1.  Fix your squeaks: If your entry doors squeak and whine when it opens, you must fix it.  The entry door is the first thing and the last thing you encounter when you are coming and going from home.  The sound is as if a dog is crying and it can affect your mood and well being.  Sometimes you become so accustomed to the sound that you don’t even notice it.  You must oil the door hinge and create more positive energy when you enter and leave your house.  It also helps to oil any other door hinges throughout the home.  However, the entry door is the most important.

2.  Use your front door: Many people live in homes where they use the garage door to enter or leave the house.  This may be convenient but from feng shui perspective this may limit good energy and opportunity to enter in your life.  The entry door represents how chi enters your home and in your life.  The easy feng shui fix is start using the front door at least once a week, the more often the better.

3.  Where to place the feng shui fountain: Water represents wealth and feng shui.  According to feng shui principles it is beneficial to place the water fountain at the entrance of your home.  It can be just inside or just outside but the most important part is that the water should be flowing towards the centre of your home.  That means that wealth and opportunity will pour into your life.

Feng shui in kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom

4.  Plants above the kitchen cabinets: It is good feng shui if there is no space above the upper kitchen cabinets.  This space above kitchen cabinets attracts dust and stagnant energy.  The chi gets stuck there and it is just dead energy, which will hold you back in your life.  For this you can keep green live plants for a positive energy.  They bring life to the area and transform the energy.

5.  Keep the bathroom door closed: Since the water flows in the bathroom and water denotes money we don’t want it to be flushed away.  To keep the energy positive it is better to keep the toilet seat covered down and the bathroom door closed.

6.  Where your bed is located: In feng shui we use the commanding position to locate important furniture such as the bed.  Because we spend many hours sleeping on it.  To place the bed in the commanding position you should be facing the door while not in line with the door while lying on your bed.  Ideally you can be diagonally across the room from your bedroom door.  However, this is not always possible.  So you can find a mirror and place it in a way where you can see your door while lying on your bed.

7.  Cover up the TV in your bedroom: If you have any problems sleeping your bedroom, it may be due to the active energies of your TV.  So you can put a cloth on your TV and cover it.

8.  Clean all windows: Windows has to be clean for a good flow of energy in your home.  This is because you look outside of the home through the windows.  So you must clean your windows of all the dirt.

9.  Do a space clearing: Our homes and environment retain the energetic imprints of those who inhabit the spaces.  It is always good to burn out the old energy and welcome the fresh chi.

Conclusion:  If you want your home to be a source of positive energy then follow all the rules of feng shui as described above.
