Blinds vs Curtains, what is better?

Introduction

Blinds vs curtains, this discussion often comes up when we decide about the window treatment. As when it comes to designing of a home the window treatment also is an integral part of it.  Window treatment depends upon how much light we want to let in and what is the look and feel that we want to create.  When it comes to window treatment we can either use blinds or curtains.  There is often a debate as to blinds vs curtains which one is better.  In this post we will look into detail the differences between the blinds and the curtains and which is better and why.

1.  Mechanism: Window curtains are a piece of fabric suspended at the top to form screen, typically movable sideways along a rail and found as one pair at a window. Whereas, blinds have slats that can be tilted, opened, or closed using cords that run through the blinds.  There orientation can be vertical or horizontal.

Our stand:  Curtains are better for they have an easy and simple mechanism.

2.  Material: Window curtains are made of colourful fabrics of different textures.  Depending upon the interiors of your house you can choose from a wide range of materials like cotton, silk, polyester, linen, lace etc.  Whereas window blinds are made up of hard materials like wood, bamboo, aluminium, plastic, or composite materials.

Our stand:  Curtains are better as they offer wider range of materials.

Blinds vs curtains: Sound

3.  Insulation and soundproofing: Curtains do not have gaps so they don’t let the sound pass through them, thus they are better at insulation and soundproofing. Blinds have gaps that allow the sound to enter, therefore it offers less insulation and soundproofing.

Our stand:  Curtains are better if you want to soundproof your home.

4.  Types: There are various types of curtains available like flat panel, tab top, grommet, rod pocket, and thermal.

Whereas, blinds are available in different types like venetian blinds, vertical blinds, faux wood blinds, panel track blinds, mini blinds, roller blinds, roman blinds etc.

Our stand:  Both offer a good range of choice, so choose based on your interior design and style.

5.  Space: Curtains take more space than blinds and therefore it makes the room appear smaller.  Whereas blinds take less space and it saves space because it does not requires any area on the sides of the window like curtains, so they make the room appear bigger and are a preferred choice for people living in small apartments and even for small office spaces.

Our stand:  Blinds are better if you have a smaller space.  You can opt for curtains for larger rooms.

6.  Designs: Curtains come in a wide range of widths, lengths, thicknesses, fabrics, styles, colours, patterns and levels of transparency.  Whereas, blinds come in many styles, colours, and textures but they are not as versatile in design as curtains.

Our stand:  Curtains are better from design standpoint as they offer a wide range of choice.

Light

7.  Light control: Curtains filter out some light but they cannot filter all of it and so it cannot keep your bedroom totally dark.  Whereas, blinds have slats that can be adjusted and with that we can control if more or less light comes through the window.

Our stand:  If you want a better control of light in your room, blinds are better.

8.  Ease of cleaning: Curtains are easy to clean as it can be washed in the washing machine.  Though lot of dust can get accumulated in the curtains so they need to be cleaned regularly.  Whereas, blinds are easier to clean in case of stains or splashes.  For example, venetian blinds can be wiped with a duster.  Other blinds are also easy to clean by following the manufacturer’s instructions.  Some blinds may be difficult to clean, especially if they need to be removed each time.  Water can also damage some types of plies that are made of wood or aluminium.

Our stand: Curtains are better when it comes to ease of cleaning.

9.  Winter season: Window curtains can keep a room warmer, whereas window blinds are less efficient in keeping the room warm and heated.

Our stand:  Curtains are better in winters and in all seasons.

10.  Operation: Curtains are easy to operate, whereas blinds are difficult to operate especially for children.

Our stand:  Curtains are better when it comes to ease of operation.

Usage

11.  Uses: Curtains are mainly used in residences i.e. bedroom, living room, drawing room etc.  Whereas, blinds are most commonly used in the commercial buildings like offices, hospitals, restaurants etc.

Our stand:  Select on the basis of where you want to use them in residence or at the office and commercial purpose.

12.  Life: Curtains can last up to 10 years depending on the quality of cloth and thickness.  Whereas blinds can last up to 15 years depending on type and brand.

Our stand:  It depends what factors are more important for you and what type of space you are using them for.

13.  Price: Curtains are cheaper as compared to blinds.  The price of curtains varies depending upon type of fabric and thickness.  The blinds, on the other hand are often more expensive than curtains.  Plastic blinds are cheaper but wood and vinyl blinds are costlier.

Our stand:  Blinds vs curtains, choose as per your requirement and budget.

5 Advantages of false ceiling

A lot many people think that the benefit of false ceiling is only related to aesthetic. However there are many other benefits of false ceiling. Here are some of the important benefits of false ceiling:

1.  Saves energy on air conditioning: It helps to save energy on air conditioning.  For example, if the height of your room is 10 feet and if you construct false ceiling at a height of 9 feet then the volume of the room gets reduced.  So the air condition has to cool the lesser volume of the room now.  This saves energy.

2.  Avoid sunlight heat: It insulates you from sunlight.  If you get direct sunlight then it helps to form extra insulation layer that keeps the room cool for the longer periods even during the hot summers.

3.  Indirect lights: These days we use LED lights instead of bulbs and tubelights.  If you do false ceiling you can put LED light, panel light, strip lights.  It enhances the ambience of the home and it starts to look more aesthetically pleasing.  This also saves electricity.

4.  Hides the wiring: It helps to conceal the electrical wires in the room thus making it look more beautiful.

5.  Reduces noise pollution: It also helps to reduce the noise pollution from outside of the home.  For example in a classroom and in an auditorium where there is lot of noise, it prevents the sound from resonating thus reducing the noise pollution.  Even in cinema halls it is used to prevent the noise pollution.

Conclusion:  False ceiling helps in beautifying the space and also provides thermal insulation with other above listed benefits.

6 Ways to declutter your home

The reason why it is important to declutter your home is because when there is clutter around one is not able to focus.  Too much clutter causes stress and it can also lead to poor health and  hygiene.  So for your own peace of mind you should declutter.  Here are the 6 ways in which you can declutter your home.

1.  Remove all the packaging material: Whenever you buy something, it comes in a big package. You do not want to throw away the packaging material because you feel that you might need it in the future.  This is not true because the packaging material keep lying there in a store room or attic and keeps gathering dust and worst still even decays with time, where it becomes unusable.  So it is better to throw it away as it is only a clutter in your home that you want to get rid of.

2.  Fold whenever possible: If you have too many clothes in your closet, you can just fold them and keep them in the drawer.  This is a good way of decluttering your closet.

Remove “Extra”

3.  Get rid of extra linens: If you have extra towels, bed sheets, tablecloths and you feel that you might need them in future, you are wrong.  You may need just a few extra linens but not a hoard of them.  So if you have extra linens just donate them and declutter your closet.

4.  Tidy up at the end of each day: Whether you work at your home or at an office, declutter your work space at the end of the day.  This will really make a big difference the next morning.  The more clutter is there the more clutter it attracts and the cleaner is your space the more you are likely to keep it clean.  This will  help increase your focus and help you become more productive.

User manuals are clutter too

5.  Throw away user manuals: There are so many user manuals that come with your vacuum cleaner, juicer, mixer grinder and almost every gadget that you buy.  You keep it aside thinking that you may need it at some time.  However, the reality is that you will not need it ever, because now-a-days all information about all products and their user manuals are available online, so better to throw it away then gather the clutter.

6.  Sentimental clutter: When we grow up we still hold on to some of the stuff from our childhood that we do not want to part away with.  However, everything from our childhood cannot be kept for a long time.  Let us face it, it is a clutter and no matter how sentimental we feel about it we need to get rid of it.

Conclusion:  If you want to have peace and serenity in your home then you got to  declutter.  Decluttering has a very positive effect on your life, you will feel much better and lighter after you declutter.

If you like to live in clean and beautiful spaces you can get your home designed by our team at CREATIVEBUILD as we have a team of architects that are expert at designing and decorating your home.

How to prepare to welcome a guest in your home?

So you have a guest coming over to stay with you for a day or two, or more and you don’t have a guest room.  How can you prepare your home to welcome the guest anyway and make room for them.  Here are some of the tips that will come handy when you find yourself in this situation:

Prepare the bed first

1.  Prepare the bed: First and foremost decide where would be the bed for the guest.  Pick a corner for your guest’s bed.  If you don’t have a bed, you can arrange for a couch.  It can be a single bed for one person or a double bed for 2 persons.  Put nice bed covers on the bed along with fluffy pillows with nice pillow covers.  A bed with a good pair of pillow covers and bedsheets looks inviting and your guest will feel welcomed if you use it.

2.  Put a bedside table: If you put a bedside table alongside the bed it will be convenient for the guest.  He or she can keep some personal belongings like spectacles, pen, hand bag etc. on the table.

3.  Add a reading lamp: A reading lamp by the bedside really offers comfort when your guest likes to read something at night or even when he or she wakes up at night to use the restroom.  If you think about it and place a reading lamp, they will certainly be grateful for your thoughtfulness.

4.  Keep separate towels for the guest: Keeping some nice bath   towels for the guest on his or her bed is a good idea.  This way they will feel that you care for them and they will be very happy.

Conclusion:  You only need to take few thoughtful steps to make your guest feel welcomed in your home and create a space for them in your home.
