3 interior design rules for great interiors

When it comes to interior design, one must be very particular about the symmetry and harmony.  To achieve this there are certain rules that if you follow your design will look great and appealing.

1.  3/3 Vertical rule: This is a concept by designer Mark McCauley.  This was brought forth by stripping nature to colours.  According to this the darkest colours are found in the ground like soil, mud, and the very earth.  While the medium tones are in the middle like plants, building, the bodies of water and lastly on the top is the lightest the sky, the clouds, and sunlight.  We can use these elements to interior design and room will look beautiful and balanced.  Using the darker elements on or near the floor, the medium shades in the middle and the lightest on the top.   It is suggested to ascend from dark to light rather than light to dark in interiors.

2.  60-30-10 rule: This rule is all about creating the perfect colour palate for your space. 60-30-10 rule is choosing a main colour, a secondary colour, and an accent colour.  Your favourite colour should just be one of them.  The 60% would be your wall(paint or wallpaper), rugs, sometimes a sofa.  The 30% would be the window treatments, accent chairs, bedding, furniture, accent walls.  Lastly the 10% would be your decor, artworks, throw pillows etc.

3.  Rule of odds: Basically this is arranging or grouping items in odd numbers.  Surprisingly, the odd number groupings look more balanced and visually appealing then even numbered ones. Three is a magical number.

If you follow the above rules your home interior design will look great.  If you want to do interior design of your home visit us at: CREATIVEBUILD

7 Main Interior design styles

1.  Bohemian: First style is the Bohemian style.  Bohemian is a carefree and colourful interior design style and the key to perfecting this style is to create a purposeful, messy look.

2.  Contemporary: If you like your homes clean and open with lots of neutrals and curved lines then your style is most likely contemporary.

3.  Mid-century modern: It is very specific to mid-century i.e. around 1950s.  It is also very functional. It places a heavy focus on lighting.  .

4.  Traditional: It uses a lot of warmer colour palates like peaches, greens, and gold.  Floral and stripes are very common in this style.  They have lot of accessories like books, chandeliers, rot iron,  lot of intricate designs, and mirrors etc.

5.  Minimalism: If you hate stuff then you are probably a minimalist.  Minimalist pick furniture and accessories that they absolutely need.  There is an empty space feeling in a minimalist home and a lot of open space and no clutter.

8 Tips to organize a small kitchen

When it comes to your kitchen you want everything to be neatly organized and uncluttered.  For a clean and uncluttered look of your small kitchen the one of the major challenges that you may be facing is lack of storage.  If you have less storage space then it is quite difficult to make your kitchen look neat and tidy.  However, this is not so difficult, if you apply the tips that I am going to share with you in this blog.  Here are the tips to organize your small kitchen:

Create more space

1.  Use your refrigerator top: If you are short on storage space you can use the top of your refrigerator to place your big appliances.  If the refrigerator is too high you can use a small folding step stool to access the appliances.

2. Use your walls: If you don’t have a big drawer space then you can use your wall space to make up for your drawers.  You can hang your spatulas and ladles on the nail on the wall.  It looks good as well as it is easy to access.  You can also hang spice racks on the wall to place your spice jars.  This way you can make up for your lack of storage and keep your kitchen clutter free as you don’t leave everything on your countertop.  You can hang a towel basket as well on the wall to keep your kitchen towels there.

3. Use containers in your big drawers: If you have a big drawer you want it to look organize and access everything in it easily.  For this use containers in your big drawers so that everything has an outlined place.  It is for you to find what you need.  You don’t want things popping up when you open the drawer.

4.  Use vertical space: You can use vertical space in your cabinet by putting a basket on the cabinet door.  You can also hang things on the side of your cabinet, this way you can really utilize your vertical space that otherwise would remain unused.  It will also save you a lot of space for your other stuff that you want to store.

Some Practical tips

5.  Practically position your pans: You can hang your pans on the side of the cabinet doors on a command hook.  You must practically position the pans in such a way that the ones that you often use are easily accessible and the ones that you don’t use that often can be put behind.  You can have a lid organizer to keep your lids of the pans organized.

6.  Use kitchen racks: Where there is no cabinet space you can use kitchen racks to place some of the very important items like your electric kettle, coffee maker, and coffee mugs.  You can put any other stuff that you often use to hang in the racks when there is less storage space in a small kitchen.

7.  Get rid of extra stuff: One of the very effective ways to organize things in your small kitchen is to get rid of the extra stuff that you do not use or that is duplicate.  This will save a lot of space for things that you want to have in your kitchen and want to use.  Also get rid of the ingredients that you are not going to use and are lying in your box.  It is better to give them away to someone who will use them rather than letting it take up your precious little kitchen space.

8.  Use space above your cabinets: You can use space above your cabinets also to keep the stuff.  It will save you a lot of shelf space and accommodate a lot of your kitchen stuff that you use in cooking and baking.   You can buy some nice looking canisters that match your cabinets to place over the top of the cabinets.  You can also place a can organizer to put your cans at the top of your cabinets.

Conclusion:  If you have a small kitchen and you want it to look clean and clutter free then you can use above mentioned ideas to increase the storage space even in a small kitchen with just a little imagination and some common sense.

13 Tips for small bathroom organization

In the big cities in India where space is a challenge, we find that the size of the flat in an apartment is quite small and as a result even the size of the bathroom is small.  In such a scenario, it is difficult to make a bathroom look organized and at the same time have space for storing all of your bathroom related stuff. So here are few tips for a small bathroom organization:

1.  A cabinet with a mirror: You can put a cabinet that has storage space and also has a mirror on it.  So it serves two in one purpose of a mirror as well as storage.  You can place a lot of your stuff like your toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving items for men etc. in this storage and use it as a mirror as well.  Many such cabinets with mirror are available in the market.

2.  Corners: You can buy corners for your bathroom, in which you can put a lot of your stuff.  It also comes with suction, so you don’t have to use any nail and no need to drill the wall in case you are living in a rented house.  You can place many corners of different colours as well.  This not only looks beautiful but can also contain a lot of your stuff in it.

3.  Rack: You can place a rack in your bathroom that can contain a lot of your stuff.  If there is a platform on your washbasin, you can put it there, so it will prevent your bottles from getting scattered at all over the place.  This keeps your washbasin organized and it is easy to keep it clean.

4.  Small stick on rack: You can use small wall mounted stick on racks as well.  There is no need for nail or drilling with this product as well.  You can place it on the wall of the washbasin or in the shower area.

5.  Caddy: You can buy a caddy to put it into cupboards or if you have space under the washbasin you can also place it there.  All your make up stuff or other things can come into it and they don’t fall here and there and remain organized.

6.  Hooks for brooms and wipers: You can place a hook or two in your bathroom for hanging a broom or a wiper.  This will give it a neat look and at the same time it will be easy to clean your bathroom.

7.  Rack with a towel hanger: For your small bathroom you can hang a rack with a towel hanger in it.  This will give you a place to put your things as well as you can hang your towel on it.  This also looks classy and elegant.

8.  Sets of hand wash dispenser, soap case and storage: You can buy your hand wash dispenser, soap case and small storage in a set.  They look very beautiful in a set.

9.  Tooth paste and tooth brush holder: You can buy a tooth paste and tooth brush holder which will make it look good and will not take a lot of space in the bathroom.

10.  Beautiful toilet brush holder: There are many beautiful toilet brush holders that are available in the market that look like a showpiece but are actually toilet brush.

11.  Rack for bathroom sleepers: You can place a rack for your bathroom sleepers either inside the bathroom or just outside it.  It makes your bathroom look organized.

12.  Buy sets of bucket, mugs, stool, and dustbin: You can buy all four items in a set. If you match it with your bathroom tiles they look even more beautiful and in harmony with each other and enhance the look of your bathroom.

13.  Artificial plant: If you place an artificial plant in your shower area or in the washbasin area it will enhance the look and feel of your small bathroom.

Conclusion:  If you use little imagination and purchase right storage as mentioned above you can make your small bathroom look beautiful and more organized.

6 Interior design mistakes that you must avoid

Introduction

For your interior design to look good it is very important that everything is in its proper place, everything that you put in the rooms is in harmony with each other and each room’s interior is synchronized with the other.  There should be a flow in the interior of each room and your home should feel like a beautiful and comfortable place for you to relax and live your best life in your home.  However, we do sometimes make some mistakes when it comes to interiors and if we avoid those mistakes the overall effect can just be much better.  Even though I have written about it in my earlier blog, it is a topic that one can discuss over and over.  So here are top 6 interior design mistakes that you must avoid:

Avoid these mistakes

1.  Not hanging your curtains high enough: The first mistake that people make is hang their curtains way to low.  They do not hang their curtains close to the ceiling, they hang them close to the window, which, makes the whole house look small and that is not the vibe that you want when you walk into your home.  You want your eyes to go up.  Your curtains should match the color of your wall and it is always good to have curtains that are light in color like white.

2.  Not measuring before you purchase: The second mistake that people make is that they do not measure before they purchase before they go to shop.  So what is recommended is either you draw a floor plan or you take measurements of your space or furniture that you have and note it down somewhere so that when you go for shopping you don’t end up buying things that are out of proportion.

3.  Picking the wrong rug size: The third mistake that you may be making is picking the wrong rug size for the space.  If you pick a rug that is small it can make your space look small as opposed to widening out the space and making the space look bigger.   Specifically in the living room you want the rug to go at least half way under the furniture.  It should be a big rectangular rug that should fill your space.

Common mistakes

4.  Hanging your art too high: This is the fourth common mistake that people make.  In theory, your art when you hang it should be your eye level.  If you have bigger space you can make it go a few inches higher but generally it is good to keep it at the eye level.  If your art is near a window or a door frame then the height of the door frame and height of the art should be somewhat similar.

5.  Putting all of your furniture up against walls: This is the fifth common mistake that people make.  Bringing the furniture away from the walls and setting them up in different angled areas will allow for a better community feeling, better conversation areas and it doesn’t make the space feel really awkwardly broken up and just starkly open.  You want to make it feel cozy but you should do it in a way that allows convenient walk ways, doesn’t block doors and there is kind of a strategy behind doing that.

6.  Using complete matching furniture sets: The sixth common mistake that people make is they go to furniture stores and they buy a furniture set and that is what they put into their bedroom or into their homes.  You can actually buy furniture that actually looks cohesive and is in harmony with each other but it doesn’t need to be a set that looks too similar.

Conclusion

If you want your interiors to look good then you must make it look unique and make it match your personal style and at same time avoid the above common mistakes.
